Image Evolution

December 20, 2008 ... no comments

Now here’s something fun: http://alteredqualia.com/visualization/evolve/

So I’ve been playing around with this most of today.  Basically it takes a 200×200 pixel image, and starts using random iterations of polygons to try and get closer and closer to reproducing the original.  It starts off with 50 invisible polygons, and begins cycling through them, changing their shape and/or colour.  It then computes if the change makes the composition closer to the original image.  If it does, it keeps the change, if not it discards it.  Repeat this a million times, and it actually does a pretty damn good job.

So considering what I do for my job, I thought I might be useful and start sharing useful things I find along the way.  It’s almost a weekly occurrance that I come across something that makes me go “Why haven’t I been doing this for the last 6 months?”

I’ll put this behind a fold, for those who really couldn’t care less.

Immigrant Song

Fun and simple song to play, but it gives you a damn good leg workout.  Good for working on fast single kicks.

    1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a
HH x x x x x x x x x x
SN x x
K x x x x x x x x

Bear Turing

December 18, 2008 ... one comment

So I am not sure how many of you are familiar with what a Turing Test is, but basically it is a test proposed to see whether or not a computer system can successfully imitate a human.  I’ll spare you the boring details, but if you’re interested you can read about it here.
Anyways, there is a program I use at work, and on one screen it gives a list of names of our clients.  It will shorten the longer names… and I noticed that what it displayed for one client is “Bear …turing” (I won’t tell you the full name for the sake of <spooky>confidentiality</spooky>)

The whole point of this is, I now can’t stop thinking about replacing the computer in a Turing test and replacing it with a bear at a keyboard.

Also I removed my eyebrow piercing today, which made me a little sad.  It’s tough for me to actually admit “defeat” in that kind of situation.  However, I strongly suspected it was beginning to migrate away from my face, so I decided I’d pick my battles, and hope to try again later.  At least this way it will minimize the scarring.

Monday again!

So I must have like… reverse SAD or something, because while today was incredibly cold (-22 C) and all around rather miserable, I was in one of thest best moods I’ve been in for a while.  I felt very refreshed.  Also, I got to send a revised “Job description” to one of my coworkers, and I managed to slip in a few silly things which I heard her chuckling about.

-Data Entry (Skills required: Typing, basic reading comprehension, sight, functioning medulla oblongata. )

Had a good weekend with Shauna, and I won’t be seeing her again until Christmas.  This gives me plenty of time to make her the diamond unicorn she has been insisting I promised to get her…

Getting into the spirit, I’ve made a little Christmas theme for my blog!

Edit; Okay it’s more of a general “Winter” theme.  So sue me.

So, cars are expensive! Just yesterday I was driving home, and noticed that the heat gauge was going up. Most definitely abnormal. I wasn’t anywhere I could really stop until I got home, but I made it without incident. Checked fluids and stuff, coolant was low. Filled it up with water, and found a leak. Bla bla bla, cost 280$ to fix. Also, I have to replace my front struts, which is probably going to be at least 400$.

Rock Band will have to wait. :(
